Jixiang once indulged in romance and neglected his career. After being persuaded by his elders, he seized the opportunities presented by reform and opening-up to work hard and start a business, eventually achieving career success. He dotes on his daughter, Rubao, but disciplines her strictly, allowing her to venture out on her own to gain experience. Rubao meets Ruzhu outside, and the two go from bickering rivals to falling in love and getting married. The two generations pursue their dreams, conveying the message that growth inevitably involves hardships and that one can live a wonderful life as long as one stays true to one’s original aspirations.
